Metal Handicrafts of India

History of Indian Metal Handicrafts dates back to 3000 B.C. The enchanting metal figurine of a dancing girl and other metal art belonging to Indus valley civilization are testimony to the high quality of workmanship practiced by ancient Indian craftsmen. It would be prudent to also mention bronze sculptures belonging to the Chola rulers and the iron pillar at Mehrauli, in Delhi, which was created during the time of King Ashok.

Metals including copper, iron, silver and alloys like bronze, bell and white metals were used (and still used) to create a range of artifacts such as pots, pans, utensils, photo frames, sculptures of deities, mythological figures, animals and many home decor items.

If we try to put light over different forms of metal art based on various regions of India, then we will understand that the metal art in this country has been as varied as different cultures of India. Jaipur in Rajasthan is known for brass engraving and lacquering. Products such as bowls, plates, boxes and other home decor items which have stamps of ethnic designs and floral patterns. Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, as we all know, is popular all over the world for its range of brass items that includes household items like pots, trays, bowls and decorative pieces. Most the metal crafts made in Moradabad are decorated with intricate etching. Varanasi, the most ancient city in the word is famous for cast sculptures of deities and utensils made of brass and copper. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh is famous for Bidri ware while Dokra metal craft is popular in the tribal belts of Andhra, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. The Ladakh in Kashmir is known for traditional vessels made out of iron and brass. The craftsmen of Kashmir are also known for richly engraved traditional household items like bowls, samovars, plates and trays.
